CS2 Case Hardened Guide

Complete Guide to Blue Gems, Gold Patterns & Pattern Indexes

Blue Gem Guide Price Guide Updated Apr 2026

What is Case Hardened?

Case Hardened is one of the oldest and most iconic skins in Counter-Strike history, introduced with the original Arms Deal Update. Available on the AK-47, Five-SeveN, and every knife, the pattern features a unique mix of blue, purple, gold, and silver colors. No two Case Hardened skins are alike — the pattern index determines the exact color distribution, making some patterns worth thousands while others sell at market price.

Case Hardened Color Spectrum

The Case Hardened texture file contains four distinct colors that combine in varying proportions based on the pattern index. Understanding the value hierarchy of these colors is essential:

Blue

Rarity: Very Rare (full coverage)

Most valuable color. High blue = "Blue Gem." Can multiply value by 10-100x.

Purple

Rarity: Uncommon

Second most desirable. Mixed with blue creates "Blaze" or "Rainbow" patterns.

Gold

Rarity: Rare (full coverage)

Full gold is quite rare. Valued by niche collectors but less popular than blue.

Silver / Grey

Rarity: Very Common

Most common color. Heavy silver patterns are worth at or below market price.

Blue Gem Patterns

The Blue Gem — Most Valuable Case Hardened

"Blue Gem" refers to any Case Hardened pattern with an exceptionally high percentage of blue on the playside. True Blue Gems are the rarest and most valuable non-Doppler skins in the game, with some reaching six-figure price tags. The most famous is the AK-47 pattern #661, known as the "Scar" pattern.

Blue Gem Tiers:

  • Tier 1 (95%+ blue): 50-100x+ market
  • Tier 2 (85-95% blue): 20-50x market
  • Tier 3 (70-85% blue): 5-20x market
  • Decent blue (50-70%): 2-5x market
  • Some blue (30-50%): 1.2-2x market

Famous Pattern Indexes:

  • AK-47 #661: "Scar" — Most blue AK
  • AK-47 #670: Near-full blue top
  • AK-47 #955: Full blue magazine
  • Five-SeveN #278: Near-full blue
  • Five-SeveN #690: Full blue top

Pro Tip: Blue coverage on the "playside" (the side you see in-game when holding the weapon) is what matters most. A knife or AK with heavy blue on the backside but silver on the playside is not a true Blue Gem and will not command premium pricing.

Other Valuable Patterns

Gold Pattern

A fully gold Case Hardened is quite rare and appeals to niche collectors. While not as universally popular as Blue Gems, a full gold AK-47 or knife can command 2-5x market price from the right buyer. The challenge is finding collectors who appreciate this pattern.

Value: 2-5x market (collector-dependent)

Gold Pattern Notes:

  • Full gold coverage is very rare
  • Less demand than blue = harder to sell
  • Some collectors pay premium for "clean gold"
  • Best valued on AK-47 and large knives

Blaze / Rainbow / Galaxy Pattern

The "Blaze" or "Rainbow" pattern features a high percentage of purple marbled with blue patches on a gold background. This creates a colorful, galaxy-like appearance. Values vary widely depending on the exact purple/blue distribution and collector preference.

Value: 1.5-4x market (variable)

Blaze Characteristics:

  • High purple + blue coverage
  • Gold background visible
  • Very unique and eye-catching
  • Pricing highly subjective

Case Hardened by Weapon Type

AK-47 Case Hardened

The AK-47 is the most popular and most traded Case Hardened weapon. Blue coverage is measured primarily on the top of the receiver (the flat part visible when holding the weapon). Blue magazine is an additional bonus that adds value. The AK-47 has the widest price range of any Case Hardened weapon — from $50 for a common pattern to $100,000+ for pattern #661.

Blue Top

Blue on the receiver top — most important area for value

Blue Magazine

Blue on the magazine — adds 10-30% premium

Blue Butt

Blue on the stock — minor value addition

Five-SeveN Case Hardened

The Five-SeveN is the second most popular Case Hardened weapon. Its compact body makes full-blue coverage more achievable, and Blue Gem Five-SeveNs are more affordable than AK-47 equivalents. A great entry point for Blue Gem collectors on a budget.

Blue Gem Five-SeveN value range: $50-$5,000+ depending on pattern and condition

Knife Case Hardened

Every knife in CS2 can have a Case Hardened finish. Blue Gem knives command enormous premiums, with some Karambit and M9 Bayonet Blue Gems reaching $50,000+. The most famous knife patterns include the Karambit "Hiko Pattern" and the M9 Bayonet "OCEANO" — both with near-full blue coverage.

Most Valuable Knife Types for Blue Gem:

  • Karambit — Highest prices, most collected
  • M9 Bayonet — Large blade, impressive patterns
  • Butterfly — Growing popularity in CS2
  • Bayonet — Clean, visible blade surface

Key Considerations:

  • Playside blue matters most for value
  • Backside blue adds minor premium
  • Pattern consistency across spine adds value
  • Battle-Scarred Blue Gems can still be valuable

How to Identify & Value Patterns

1. Check Pattern Index (Paint Seed)

Every Case Hardened skin has a pattern index (0-999) that determines its exact color distribution:

  1. Get the inspect link from Steam Market or inventory
  2. Paste into CSGOFloat.com
  3. Note the pattern index (paint seed) number
  4. Look up the seed in Blue Gem databases

2. Use Blue Gem Databases

Community-maintained databases catalog every pattern index with screenshots and tier rankings. These resources show you exactly how much blue each seed has and its approximate market value. Always cross-reference before trading.

3. Consider Wear & Condition

Unlike most skins, Case Hardened Blue Gems can be valuable in any condition — even Battle-Scarred. While Factory New commands the highest prices, a great pattern in BS can still be worth significant money. The pattern matters more than the wear for Blue Gems.

Case Hardened Price Guide

Pattern Type AK-47 Multiplier Knife Multiplier Rarity
Tier 1 Blue Gem (95%+) 50-100x+ 100-500x+ Extremely Rare
Tier 2 Blue Gem (85-95%) 20-50x 30-100x Very Rare
Tier 3 Blue (70-85%) 5-20x 10-30x Rare
Full Gold 2-5x 3-8x Rare
Blaze / Rainbow 1.5-4x 2-5x Uncommon
Common (Silver/Mixed) 1x 1x Common

Investment Tips

  • Tier 1-2 Blue Gems are among the safest CS2 skin investments
  • AK-47 Blue Gems have the most liquid market with consistent demand
  • Five-SeveN Blue Gems offer an affordable entry point for collectors
  • Blue Gem values tend to appreciate over time as supply is fixed
  • Battle-Scarred Blue Gems can be hidden value — pattern trumps condition
  • Karambit and M9 Bayonet Blue Gems are the ultimate long-term holds

Case Hardened FAQ

What is the most expensive Case Hardened ever sold?

The most expensive Case Hardened skins include AK-47 #661 (Scar Pattern) in Factory New and various Karambit Blue Gems, which have sold for over $100,000. The exact record changes as private sales occur, but Tier 1 Blue Gems on popular weapons consistently reach five to six figures.

Can I get a Blue Gem from a case opening?

Yes — every Case Hardened unboxed has a random pattern index, and Blue Gem seeds are possible. However, the probability of getting a Tier 1 or Tier 2 Blue Gem is extremely low (less than 1% of all seeds). Most unboxed Case Hardened skins will have common silver/gold patterns.

Does StatTrak affect Blue Gem value?

Yes — a StatTrak Blue Gem is worth significantly more than a non-StatTrak version with the same pattern index and wear. StatTrak Blue Gems are extremely rare since they require both the right pattern seed and the StatTrak attribute. Premium can be 2-3x over the non-StatTrak equivalent.

Why is Battle-Scarred Blue Gem still valuable?

The Case Hardened blue color stays vibrant regardless of wear — unlike most skins where Battle-Scarred significantly degrades appearance. The dark, scratched aesthetic can actually enhance the blue color contrast on some patterns. Collectors value the pattern over condition, making BS Blue Gems a legitimate market segment.

Is the Glock-18 Case Hardened also traded for patterns?

There is no Glock-18 Case Hardened in CS2. Case Hardened is only available on the AK-47, Five-SeveN, and knives. For Glock-18, the closest pattern-based skin is the Glock-18 Fade.
