CS2 Money Management & Economy Guide
Master the economy system to maintain financial advantage over your opponents
Understanding CS2's economy system is crucial for competitive success. Smart economy management ensures your team can afford full buys when needed, forces opponents into disadvantageous eco rounds, and maximizes your chances of winning rounds. This guide covers income mechanics, buy strategies, and team economy coordination.
CS2 Economy Mechanics
Round Win Income:
Counter-Terrorists:
- $3,250 - Win by elimination or time expiration
- $3,500 - Win by defusing the bomb
Terrorists:
- $3,250 - Win by elimination
- $3,500 - Win by bomb detonation
- $800 - Bonus for planting the bomb (even if round is lost)
Loss Bonus System:
CS2 uses a loss bonus system that increases your income for consecutive round losses, helping teams recover from losing streaks:
- 1st consecutive loss: $1,400
- 2nd consecutive loss: $1,900
- 3rd consecutive loss: $2,400
- 4th consecutive loss: $2,900
- 5th+ consecutive loss: $3,400
Note: Winning a round resets the loss bonus to $1,400. The bomb plant bonus (+$800) does not break the loss streak.
Kill Rewards:
- $300 - Rifle kills, SMG kills, Shotgun kills
- $300 - Pistol kills (except CZ-75)
- $100 - CZ-75 kills
- $100 - AWP kills
- $0 - Knife kills (but you take their weapon)
- $900 - Bonus for SMG kills (total $1,200)
Buy Round Strategies
Full Buy
When: Team has ~$4,500+ per player
Buy: Rifle (AK-47/M4), Full armor, Full utility (2 flashes, smoke, HE/molotov)
Strategy: This is your standard competitive loadout. Coordinate utility usage and execute strategies. One player can AWP if team economy allows and role requires it.
Force Buy
When: Can't afford full buy but must win round (e.g., CT side preventing match point, or breaking opponent's economy)
Buy: SMG (MP9/MAC-10) or budget rifle (Galil/FAMAS), armor, limited utility
Strategy: Aggressive plays to catch opponents off-guard. Close-range engagements favor cheaper weapons. Success can break opponent's economy.
Half Buy
When: Have ~$2,500-3,500 and guaranteed full buy next round
Buy: Upgraded pistol (P250, Five-Seven, Tec-9), armor if affordable, minimal utility
Strategy: Play for picks with upgraded pistols. If you win, great. If you lose, still have full buy next round.
Eco Round (Save)
When: Can't afford reasonable buy and need to save for guaranteed full buy next round
Buy: Default pistol only, or light armor if it doesn't prevent full buy next round
Strategy: Stack a site, go for exit frags, or rush together hoping to overwhelm one player and steal weapons. Minimize losses to build economy.
Team Economy Coordination
Individual money decisions must consider the entire team's economy:
- Buy Together: Team must buy together. One player on eco while others full buy creates a 4v5 disadvantage
- Drop for Teammates: If you have extra money ($6,000+), drop rifles for teammates with lower economy
- Communicate Economy: Call out your money before buy phase so team can coordinate
- Save Together: If team agrees to eco, everyone must save. Don't force buy alone
- AWP Responsibility: AWPer often needs team support to afford AWP + utility consistently
Advanced Economy Tactics
Breaking Opponent's Economy:
- Hunt Saves: Kill saving players to deny them weapon/money for next round
- Win Bonus Rounds: Winning both pistol + following round forces opponent into 3rd round eco
- Bomb Plant Denial: Denying T's plant costs them $800 bonus
- Force Buy Punishment: Beat their force buy to reset their loss bonus and economy
Common Scenarios:
Post-Pistol Round (Won):
Buy SMGs (MP9/MP7/UMP) for high kill reward ($900 bonus). Opponents likely on eco, so capitalize with cheap weapons that reward kills.
Post-Pistol Round (Lost):
Eco round 2, then force/full buy round 3 depending on bomb plants. Don't force buy round 2 if you can't full buy round 3.
Match Point Defense (CT):
Consider force buying even with low money. Losing ends the match anyway, so money doesn't matter. Give yourself a chance.
14-14 Overtime:
Everyone starts with $10,000. Buy full utility and coordinate your buys for maximum impact in crucial overtime rounds.
Pro Economy Tips
- Track Opponent Economy: Count their round losses and estimate their money. Predict their force buys
- Win the Economic War: Sometimes losing a gun round is acceptable if it breaks their economy for 3+ rounds
- Pistol Round Investment: Armor + utility on pistol round can be worth it for the following 2-3 round advantage
- Save Weapons: If round is lost, save rifle if possible (worth $2,700-3,100). Better than $1,400 loss bonus
- Money Ceiling: $16,000 max. Don't leave money on table - buy full utility even if comfortable economy
