CS2 Grenades & Utility Guide
Master smokes, flashes, molotovs and HE grenades to control map areas and execute strategies
Utility usage is what separates good CS2 players from great ones. Mastering grenade lineups allows you to execute site takes, retake bombsites, delay pushes, and create advantageous situations. This guide covers essential utility knowledge for all competitive CS2 maps.
Essential Smoke Grenades
Smoke grenades are the most important utility in CS2 for controlling sightlines and executing strategies. Learning key smokes for each map enables your team to safely cross dangerous areas, isolate defenders, and execute coordinated site takes.
Key Smoke Principles:
- Always learn smokes from safe positions that don't expose you to enemies
- Practice jump-throw binds for consistent lineup execution
- Coordinate smoke timing with your team for synchronized executes
- Learn one-way smokes for advantageous peeking positions
- Know CT smokes for retake scenarios and defensive setups
Essential smokes to learn for each map: Mirage: CT spawn, Jungle, Stairs, Window, Connector | Inferno: Coffins, Library, Logs, Spools, CT | Dust2: Xbox, CT spawn, Long doors, B doors | Anubis: Connector, Heaven, B site | Ancient: Donut, Cave, Mid
Molotovs & Incendiary Grenades
Molotovs (T-side) and Incendiary grenades (CT-side) are crucial for denying areas, delaying pushes, and post-plant situations. Proper molotov usage can win rounds by forcing enemies out of positions or burning time off the clock.
After-Plant Molotovs:
Post-plant molotovs are essential for terrorists defending the bomb. A well-placed after-plant molotov forces CTs to wait for it to extinguish, burning precious time. Key principles:
- Throw from safe cover where CTs can't challenge you
- Time your molotov to land when CTs are pushing the defuse
- Aim for spots that cover the bomb and surrounding areas
- Practice lineups that bounce off walls or objects for unpredictable trajectories
- Combine with teammate utility for maximum effectiveness
Defensive & Delay Molotovs:
CTs use incendiaries to delay T pushes and force enemies through chokepoints. Essential defensive molotovs include: Inferno banana, Mirage apartments/palace, Dust2 tunnels, Ancient cave, and Anubis connector. These molotovs buy time for rotations and force terrorists to use utility or wait, disrupting their execute timing.
Coordinated Site Execute Smokes
Bombsite executes require coordinated smoke usage to block key defensive positions. A properly smoked execute creates safe space for plant and forces defenders to reposition or fight through smoke.
Execute Smoke Principles:
- Timing: Coordinate with teammates for simultaneous smoke deployment
- Coverage: Ensure all dangerous angles are blocked before pushing
- Positioning: Throw from positions that don't expose you during lineup
- Depth: Use deep smokes that block rotations, not just immediate angles
- Practice: Test smokes in offline mode to ensure consistent placement
Example 5-smoke Mirage A execute: CT Spawn, Jungle, Stairs, Connector, Ticket. This blocks all common CT positions and isolates the site. Practice these standard executes with your team for reliable site takes.
Pop-Flashes & Flashbang Techniques
Pop-flashes are flashbangs that detonate immediately upon entering the enemy's field of view, giving no time to look away. Mastering pop-flashes significantly increases your entry fragging success and allows aggressive plays.
Pop-Flash Types:
- Self-Pop: Flash for yourself before peeking - throw over walls or off surfaces
- Teammate Flash: Coordinate with teammate to flash you in for entry
- Right-Click Flash: Underhand throws create unpredictable pop-flash angles
- Bounce Flash: Bank off walls/ceilings for unique flash angles
- Delay Flash: Throw flash, wait for explosion, then peek immediately
Essential pop-flash spots: Mirage A ramp/stairs, Inferno apartments/banana, Dust2 long/tunnels, Ancient mid/donut, Anubis connector/canal. Practice the timing - peek as the flash pops, not before or after. The enemy should be fully white when you round the corner.
HE Grenades
HE grenades deal damage in a radius and are most effective when combined with other utility or thrown at common rush spots. While they rarely secure kills alone, HE grenades can tag enemies, weaken stacks, and deny healing opportunities.
Effective HE Grenade Usage:
- Choke Points: Throw at common rush paths at round start to tag multiple enemies
- Stacked Positions: HEs are most effective when enemies are grouped together
- Economic Damage: Tagging enemies forces them to buy armor or play hurt
- Combo Utility: Follow molotovs with HEs to catch enemies escaping fire
- Sound Mask: HE explosions can mask footsteps during executes
Essential HE Spots by Map:
- Inferno: Mid at round start (T or CT), Banana (CT), Apartments (CT)
- Mirage: Apartments entrance (CT), Ramp (CT), Mid window from underpass (T)
- Dust2: Long doors (CT), Tunnels (CT), Xbox (T)
- Ancient: Cave (CT), Mid (T or CT), Ramp (CT)
- Anubis: Connector (CT), Mid (T or CT), Canal (CT)
- Nuke: Outside (T), Ramp (CT), Squeaky (CT)
- Vertigo: Ramp (CT or T), Mid (CT), Elevator (T)
Pro Tip: Jump-Throw Bind
Many advanced smokes require a jump-throw for consistent results. Set up a jump-throw bind by adding this to your autoexec.cfg:
alias "+jumpthrow" "+jump;-attack"; alias "-jumpthrow" "-jump"; bind "x" "+jumpthrow"
Replace "x" with your preferred key. This ensures perfect throw timing every time, making complex lineups reliable in competitive matches.
