CS2 Crosshair Placement Guide
Perfect your crosshair positioning to win gunfights before they start
Crosshair placement is the most fundamental yet overlooked skill in CS2. Perfect crosshair placement means your crosshair is always positioned where enemies are most likely to appear, minimizing the distance you need to move your mouse to secure a kill. This dramatically reduces reaction time and increases headshot percentage.
Understanding Head Level
The most important principle of crosshair placement is maintaining head level at all times. Your crosshair should always be positioned at the approximate height where an enemy's head will appear.
Head Level Principles:
- Default Position: Keep crosshair at standing head height as your baseline
- Elevation Awareness: Adjust for ramps, stairs, and height differences
- Crouch Anticipation: Be ready to adjust if enemies crouch-peek
- Distance Calibration: Head level appears lower the farther away it is
- Movement Consistency: Maintain head level while moving and strafing
Pre-Aiming Common Angles
Pre-aiming means positioning your crosshair where enemies commonly appear before they actually peek. This gives you a massive advantage by eliminating reaction delay.
Pre-Aim Techniques:
- Corner Distance: Place crosshair 6-12 inches away from corners, not directly on them
- Slice the Pie: Clear angles progressively by moving crosshair in small increments
- Common Positions: Study where enemies frequently hold and pre-aim those spots
- Peek Preparation: Position crosshair before you peek, not during
- Multiple Angles: When exposed to multiple angles, prioritize the most dangerous
Example - Mirage A Site: When pushing Palace, pre-aim Sandwich, then Default, then Jungle, then Stairs. Clear each angle systematically rather than looking at ground or center of site.
Map-Specific Crosshair Placement
Each map has unique angles and elevation changes that require specific crosshair positioning knowledge:
Inferno
- • Banana slope requires constant height adjustment
- • Apartments stairs - aim high when pushing up
- • Pit to A site - elevation changes significantly
Mirage
- • Ramp height difference when taking A
- • Stairs from Palace - aim higher
- • Mid to Window peek - adjust for elevation
Dust2
- • Long A doors - distance makes heads appear lower
- • Catwalk to A site - multiple elevation levels
- • B tunnels to site - uphill angle
Ancient
- • Mid to Donut - significant height difference
- • A ramp - adjust as you climb
- • Cave to B - lower crosshair for tight angles
Practice Methods
Workshop Maps for Practice:
Download Yprac prefire practice maps from the Steam Workshop. These maps place bots in common positions, allowing you to drill proper crosshair placement:
- Yprac Map Guides - Prefire practice for all competitive maps
- Select "Prefire Practice" mode, choose your position (T or CT), and clear bots systematically
- Focus on minimizing mouse movement between targets
- Track your completion time to measure improvement
Deathmatch Practice: In deathmatch, consciously focus on crosshair placement rather than getting kills. Move slowly and deliberately, ensuring your crosshair is always at head level. This builds muscle memory for competitive matches.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Looking at the Ground: Never let your crosshair drop below chest level when navigating the map
- Center Screen Fixation: Don't stare at center of open areas - always pre-aim specific positions
- Overpeeking Corners: Don't place crosshair directly on wall corners - leave space for enemy models
- Ignoring Elevation: Failing to adjust for ramps, stairs, and height differences costs headshots
- Lazy Rotations: Maintain crosshair discipline even when rotating or in "safe" areas
- Wide Peeks: Swinging too wide forces you to flick back instead of having crosshair pre-placed
