CS2 Spray Control & Recoil Guide

Master Weapon Recoil Patterns and Spray Control

Complete CS2 Spray Control Guide

Spray control is one of the most important mechanical skills in Counter-Strike 2. While tapping and bursting have their place, mastering full sprays allows you to secure kills faster and handle multiple enemies in quick succession. Every weapon in CS2 has a unique recoil pattern that, once learned, can be controlled for laser-accurate long sprays.

This comprehensive guide teaches you the recoil patterns for all major weapons, how to practice spray control effectively, spray transfer techniques, and when to spray vs tap vs burst. Whether you're struggling to control the AK-47 or want to perfect your M4 sprays, this guide will transform your spray control.

Understanding CS2 Recoil Mechanics

Before learning specific patterns, understand how CS2 recoil works:

Recoil Pattern

Every weapon has a fixed recoil pattern that repeats. The bullets don't go random - they follow the same path every time. Learn the pattern, control it perfectly.

Recoil Compensation

To control spray, move your mouse in the opposite direction of the recoil pattern. If bullets go up and right, pull down and left. This counteracts the recoil.

First Shot Accuracy

The first bullet is always perfectly accurate (when standing still). Recoil only kicks in from the second bullet onwards. This is why tapping is accurate at range.

Recoil Recovery

After spraying, recoil takes time to reset. Wait for full reset before next spray, or use counter-strafing to reset faster.

AK-47 Spray Pattern & Control

AK-47 - The Terrorist Rifle

The AK-47 is the most iconic CS weapon. One-shot headshot at any range, but has significant recoil. Mastering AK spray is essential for T-side.

AK-47 Spray Pattern Breakdown

  • Bullets 1-3

    Initial Vertical Rise

Pull straight down moderately. Pattern rises almost vertically.

  • Bullets 4-8

    Sharp Left Turn

Pull down and to the RIGHT. Pattern swings hard left, this is the tricky part.

  • Bullets 9-15

    Right Swing

Pull down and to the LEFT. Pattern curves back right in a long arc.

  • Bullets 16-30

    Horizontal Spray

Pull down slightly with small left-right adjustments. Pattern becomes more horizontal.

Pro Tip: Most pros only spray the first 10-15 bullets of AK, then reset or reposition. The later bullets become harder to control and you're unlikely to need all 30 in one spray.

AK-47 Practice Routine

  1. Spray on wall: Empty magazine into wall, observe pattern without compensating
  2. Compensate pattern: Spray on wall while pulling down - aim for tight bullet grouping
  3. Moving bot practice: Use aim_botz or training maps to practice on moving targets
  4. First 10 bullets: Focus on perfecting bullets 1-10 before worrying about full spray
  5. Spray transfer drill: Practice spraying one bot, transferring to another mid-spray

M4A4 & M4A1-S Spray Patterns

M4A4 Spray Pattern

30-round magazine, slightly easier to control than AK-47, cannot one-shot headshot.

  • Bullets 1-5: Straight up - pull straight down
  • Bullets 6-10: Slight left drift - pull down and right
  • Bullets 11-20: Right curve - pull down and left
  • Bullets 21-30: Horizontal spread - pull down with small adjustments

M4A4 has more forgiving recoil than AK-47 but requires more bullets to kill.

M4A1-S Spray Pattern

25-round magazine (with silencer), very accurate, minimal recoil, quieter shots.

  • Bullets 1-7: Straight up - easy pull down
  • Bullets 8-15: Left curve - pull down and right
  • Bullets 16-25: Right curve - pull down and left
  • Overall: Easiest rifle spray to control

M4A1-S is beginner-friendly with the most forgiving spray pattern.

Which M4 to Use? M4A1-S for easier spray control and accuracy. M4A4 for higher DPS and larger magazine. Most pros use M4A1-S in 2025, but both are viable.

Other Important Weapon Patterns

FAMAS (CT Economy)

$2050 CT rifle, high rate of fire, significant recoil.

  • Burst mode: 3-shot burst, more accurate
  • Auto mode: Hard to control, pull down hard
  • Best for close-medium range sprays

Galil AR (T Economy)

$1800 T rifle, lower damage but controllable.

  • Similar pattern to AK but easier
  • Good for eco rounds and anti-ecos
  • 35-round magazine allows long sprays

MP9 / MAC-10 (SMGs)

High fire rate SMGs with wild spray patterns.

  • Best used in close range spraying
  • Pull down aggressively
  • Movement while spraying is viable

UMP-45 (Economy SMG)

Accurate SMG with low recoil.

  • Very controllable spray pattern
  • Good armor penetration for SMG
  • Effective at medium range

Spray Transfer Technique

Spray transfer is continuing your spray onto a second target without resetting recoil. This advanced technique allows you to kill multiple enemies in one spray sequence.

How to Spray Transfer

  1. Start spray on first target: Begin controlling recoil normally
  2. Kill first target (usually 3-5 bullets): Maintain spray, don't let go of mouse button
  3. Flick to second target: While still spraying, quickly flick crosshair to second enemy
  4. Continue compensation: Your recoil is already high, compensate based on current bullet count
  5. Adjust for distance: Account for different distances between targets in your transfer

Common Mistake: Trying to spray transfer too far. If targets are far apart or at very different ranges, it's often better to reset your spray and take a fresh burst/spray on the second target.

Spray Transfer Practice

  • Bot maps: Use aim_botz or training maps with multiple bots close together
  • Start with 2 targets: Practice transferring between just 2 bots before more
  • Count your bullets: Know where you are in the spray pattern during transfer
  • Close range first: Practice close transfers before medium/long distance
  • Retake servers: Real scenarios with multiple enemies grouped together

When to Spray, Burst, or Tap

Knowing when to use each firing mode is as important as spray control itself.

Full Spray (Hold Mouse)

When to use:

  • Close range (0-15 meters)
  • Medium range if confident
  • Enemy is close and running
  • Multiple enemies nearby
  • Trading kills in site takes

Best DPS at close-medium range

Burst Fire (3-5 bullets)

When to use:

  • Medium range (15-30 meters)
  • Enemy is strafing at distance
  • Need accuracy but faster than taps
  • Peeking corners
  • Finishing low HP enemies

Best balance of accuracy and DPS

Tap Fire (Single shots)

When to use:

  • Long range (30+ meters)
  • AWP range engagements
  • Enemy is stationary/holding angle
  • Going for headshots
  • Low ammo situations

Maximum accuracy, lowest DPS

Spray Control Training Routine

Consistent practice is key to mastering spray control. Here's a daily routine:

5 min

Wall Spray Pattern Practice

Spray full magazine into wall. Focus on creating tight bullet grouping. Do this for AK, M4A4, and M4A1-S.

10 min

Recoil Master Workshop Map

Use "Recoil Master" workshop map. Practice all weapons against target dummies with visual pattern guides.

10 min

Moving Bot Practice (aim_botz)

Spray moving bots at various distances. Start close, gradually increase distance. Practice spray transfers between multiple bots.

5 min

First 10 Bullets Drill

Focus specifically on bullets 1-10 of AK and M4. These are most important in real games. Aim for headshot level grouping.

Total: 30 minutes daily - Practice this routine every day for 2-3 weeks and you'll see dramatic improvement in spray control. Consistency beats long practice sessions.

Pro Tips for Better Spray Control

Lower Your Sensitivity

Spray control is much easier with lower sensitivity. Most pros use 400-800 eDPI. Allows for precise micro-adjustments.

Stand Still While Spraying

Movement destroys spray accuracy. Counter-strafe to stop completely before committing to spray. Only SMGs can spray while moving.

Practice One Gun at a Time

Master AK or M4 first before learning others. Switching between patterns too quickly creates confusion and bad muscle memory.

Use Tracers to Learn

Enable bullet tracers in practice to see where bullets go. Once you understand the pattern, disable them to build muscle memory.

Crosshair at Chest Level

Start spray at chest/neck level. Recoil will naturally rise to head, increasing headshot chance. Don't start at head - you'll shoot over.

Know When to Reset

If you miss first 10 bullets, often better to stop spraying, reset recoil, and try again. Don't commit to bad sprays.

Master Your Spray Control

Spray control is pure muscle memory - there's no shortcut except consistent practice. The good news is that once you build the muscle memory, it stays with you. Dedicate 20-30 minutes daily to spray practice for 2-3 weeks and you'll see massive improvement.

Focus on the AK-47 and your preferred M4 variant first. Master the first 10-15 bullets before worrying about full sprays. Most kills happen within those first bullets anyway. Practice spray transfers to handle multiple enemies. Combined with good crosshair placement, spray control will elevate your fragging ability significantly!
